Best Invoicing Software for Indian Freelancers Who Bill Foreign Clients (2026)

11 min read

Short answer: if you bill Indian clients with GST and foreign clients in USD, EUR or GBP, you need one tool that does three things: a correct GST tax invoice for India, an export invoice under LUT for abroad, and the INR value of every foreign invoice for your CA. Most "best invoicing software" lists judge tools on only the first.

Here's the pick by situation:

  • Both halves, solo budget: Mavoin — ₹199/month. (We make it. Where it loses is spelled out below.)
  • Best free option: Zoho Invoice — if its free plan covers foreign currency for you. Test that first.
  • You want full accounting, not just invoices: Zoho Books Professional — about ₹1,499/month.
  • You also need quotes, CRM and a team: Refrens Accounts Lite — about ₹492/month on annual billing.
  • Collecting the dollars, not writing the invoice: Skydo, or a similar receiving platform. Pair it with one of the above.
  • Five invoices a year: a well-built template is fine.

Every price below was checked on the provider's own pricing page on 24 September 2026. Plans change; the table shows where each number came from.

Why most "best invoicing software" lists don't help you

Search for the best invoicing software for freelancers in India and you'll mostly find lists written by one of the tools on the list. That's not a crime — this post is written by one of the tools on this list too. The problem is the test they apply.

They check whether a tool makes a GST invoice. Almost every Indian tool does. Very few check what happens when your second client is in Austin and pays in dollars. That invoice is a different document:

  • No GST charged, if you've filed an LUT for the financial year. Export of services is zero-rated. (How to file: LUT for export of services.)
  • A declaration line stating the supply is an export under LUT without payment of IGST.
  • Place of supply outside India — not your own state, and not "India."
  • An INR value for your GST return, converted at the right rate on the right date. (Why there are three different exchange rates on one invoice: your first $2,000 from a foreign client.)
  • The same invoice number series as your Indian invoices, unless you've deliberately set up a separate one. (See changing your invoice series mid-year.)

A tool that gets the domestic invoice right and the export invoice wrong creates work for your CA every month — or a problem at year end.

How we compared

Six questions, asked of every tool:

  1. 1.Does it produce a valid GST tax invoice for Indian clients, with CGST+SGST or IGST chosen by place of supply?
  2. 2.Does it produce an export invoice under LUT, with the declaration and a foreign place of supply?
  3. 3.Can you bill in USD, EUR or GBP — and on which plan?
  4. 4.Does it record the INR value of a foreign invoice?
  5. 5.What does it cost for the plan that does 1–4, not the entry plan?
  6. 6.Can you get your data out?

Question 5 is where most comparisons mislead. A tool with a free plan and a ₹1,499 plan isn't "free" if the free plan can't bill your foreign client.

1. Mavoin — best for billing India and abroad on a solo budget

Disclosure: Mavoin is our product. Read the "where it loses" part as carefully as the rest.

Mavoin does one job: invoices for a one-person business that bills Indian clients with GST and foreign clients in their own currency.

What it does

  • GST tax invoices with CGST+SGST or IGST depending on place of supply, plus SAC, supplier GSTIN and a consecutive invoice series.
  • Export invoices under LUT, with the declaration and a foreign place of supply.
  • Foreign-currency invoices in USD, EUR or GBP, with the INR value recorded at the rate on the invoice date — the number your CA needs.
  • Paid, due and outstanding tracking across both currencies.
  • Raise an invoice from Claude or Cursor using the Mavoin connector. (How that works.)
  • Export everything — CSV, a full JSON archive, or all your invoice PDFs.

Price: 30-day trial, no card. Then ₹199/month (100 invoices) or ₹299/month (unlimited). Both plans include GST and multi-currency; they differ only in invoice count.

Where it loses

  • No quotations, expenses or CRM. If you send estimates before every job, Refrens or Zoho do more.
  • No payment collection. Your client pays by bank transfer or your receiving platform. You mark it paid.
  • No GST return filing. It gives your CA clean invoice data; it doesn't file GSTR-1 for you.
  • It's new. Zoho and Refrens have years of history and far larger user bases. If that matters to you, weigh it.
  • Not unique on AI. Refrens also ships an MCP connector on its paid plan.

Pick Mavoin if you're a solo freelancer, you bill both India and abroad, and you want the dual-currency part without paying for an accounting suite.

2. Zoho Invoice — best free option, if it covers your currency

Zoho Invoice is free, capable and backed by a large company. For Indian clients alone, it's hard to argue with.

On Zoho's own pricing page, the free product allows two users, three projects and up to 500 invoices a year, and free invoices carry "Powered by Zoho Invoice" branding.

The question for you: does the free plan let you bill a foreign client in their currency? Sources disagree. Some aggregator sites list multi-currency as part of the free plan. Several reviewers on Capterra say the opposite — that using other currencies required upgrading. Zoho's own pricing page doesn't list multi-currency among the free features.

Test it before you commit: create a free account, add a US client, and try to issue a USD invoice. Five minutes settles it for your account.

Where it loses: foreign-currency billing may push you toward a paid Zoho product, and Zoho Invoice sits inside a very large suite — capable, but more screens than a solo usually needs.

Pick Zoho Invoice if most of your billing is domestic and a quick test shows the free plan handles your foreign invoices. (More: Zoho Invoice alternative.)

3. Zoho Books — best if you want full accounting

Zoho Books is accounting software: ledgers, bank reconciliation, GST returns, reports. Invoicing is one part of it.

In India, partner sites consistently put the Professional plan at about ₹1,499/month on annual billing, excluding 18% GST — and that's the tier most sources name for multi-currency. At least one partner says per-contact multi-currency sits on higher tiers, so confirm on Zoho's India comparison page for the exact feature you need.

Where it loses: cost and weight. If your CA already keeps your books, you'd be paying for a second set of books you don't use.

Pick Zoho Books if you want to run your own books and file GST from the same place, and the monthly cost is fine. (More: Zoho Books alternative.)

4. Refrens — best for small agencies that need quotes and CRM

Refrens is a broad business suite: invoicing, quotations, CRM, expenses, and on higher plans, accounting and inventory.

From Refrens' pricing page today:

  • Basic (free): 15 documents.
  • Accounts Lite: ₹5,900/year (≈ ₹492/month), excluding GST. Adds unlimited documents, multi-currency, recurring invoices and the Refrens MCP.
  • Accounts Pro: ₹15,000/year (≈ ₹1,250/month). Adds GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B reports, e-invoices and full bookkeeping.

Where it loses: for a solo, it's a lot of product. The foreign-currency plan costs more than twice Mavoin's Starter, and GST return reports sit one tier higher.

Pick Refrens if you send quotations before every job, track leads, or have two or more people on billing. (More: Refrens alternative.)

5. Skydo (and other receiving platforms) — best for collecting, not invoicing

Skydo, Xflow, Karbon and BriskPe solve a different problem: getting your client's dollars into your Indian bank cheaply, with the paperwork.

Skydo's invoicing feature is free; you pay per payment received. Public pricing is $19 up to $2,000, $29 from $2,001 to $10,000, and 0.3% above that, each plus GST. It uses the mid-market rate and issues a FIRA free on every payment.

Where it loses: it's built around cross-border collection. Skydo describes its invoicing as GST-compliant and supports INR, but if your Indian clients pay you by NEFT or UPI, check whether it covers your domestic CGST/SGST invoices and your GSTR-1 data before you rely on it for both halves. On small invoices, the flat fee is a big percentage — $19 on a $500 invoice is 3.8%.

Pick Skydo if you want a cheaper way to receive foreign payments with a FIRA. Most freelancers who bill both India and abroad end up with two tools: one to write invoices, one to receive dollars. They are different jobs.

6. FreshBooks — best if you bill mostly abroad and aren't GST-registered

FreshBooks is a polished, US-built tool that foreign clients recognise.

List prices start at $23/month for Lite, which caps you at five billable clients. Plus is $43/month for 50 clients.

Where it loses: it isn't built around Indian GST — place of supply, SAC, the LUT declaration, the INR value for your return. And it bills you in dollars.

Pick FreshBooks if nearly all your clients are abroad, you're below the GST threshold, and your clients care about a Western-style client portal. (If you're not registered yet: freelance invoice without GST registration.)

7. Google Docs or Sheets template — fine for very low volume

A template is where most freelancers start, and for a handful of invoices a year it's fine.

Where it breaks:

  • Invoice numbers drift — two schemes in one financial year, or a skipped number.
  • You look up the exchange rate by hand, on the wrong date, every time.
  • No outstanding view. You find out a client hasn't paid when you check your bank.
  • The export declaration gets copied from an old invoice and quietly goes out of date.

A step up without software: Mavoin's free GST invoice generator and export invoice generator make a compliant PDF with no sign-up.

How to choose in two minutes

  1. 1.Do you need quotations, CRM or a team? → Refrens or Zoho.
  2. 2.Do you want to run your own books and file GST yourself? → Zoho Books.
  3. 3.Is almost everything domestic, and does Zoho Invoice's free plan handle your few foreign invoices? → Zoho Invoice.
  4. 4.Do you bill both India and abroad, alone, and want clean invoices your CA can use? → Mavoin.
  5. 5.Is the real pain receiving dollars and chasing FIRAs? → Add a receiving platform like Skydo, alongside any of the above.

What to set up whichever tool you pick

  • File your LUT before your first export invoice of the financial year. It lapses every March.
  • Put the right SAC code on every invoice. (Find yours.)
  • Keep one invoice series per financial year unless you deliberately run two.
  • Save the FIRA or e-FIRA with each foreign invoice.
  • Track when export payments arrive. Unpaid export invoices under LUT have a clock. (The one-year rule.)

Frequently asked questions

What is the best invoicing software for Indian freelancers with foreign clients?

It depends on what else you need. For invoicing alone across India and abroad on a solo budget, Mavoin (₹199/month). For a free option, Zoho Invoice, if its free plan handles your currency. For full accounting, Zoho Books Professional. For quotes and CRM, Refrens.

Is there free invoicing software that handles both GST and USD invoices?

Possibly. Zoho Invoice is free, but reviewers disagree on whether its free plan covers foreign currency, so test it with a USD client. Receiving platforms like Skydo offer free invoicing but charge per payment received.

Do I need GST registration to invoice a foreign client?

Not below the registration threshold, generally ₹20 lakh a year for services in most states. If you're not registered, you issue a plain invoice without GST.

Do I charge GST on an invoice to a US client?

If you're registered and have a valid LUT for the year, an export of services is zero-rated: no IGST on the invoice, plus a declaration saying so. Without an LUT, you charge IGST and claim a refund. Confirm with your CA.

Can I use Zoho Invoice for Indian clients and another tool for foreign clients?

You can, but your invoice numbers must stay unique within the financial year, and your CA now reconciles two systems. One tool that does both is usually simpler.

Is Skydo an invoicing tool or a payment tool?

Mainly a payment-receiving platform, with free invoicing attached. Most freelancers use it to receive foreign payments and a separate invoicing tool for the full invoice record.
