Free GST Invoice Generator for Indian Freelancers
Fill in the form, watch the invoice build itself on the right, and download a GST-compliant PDF. There is no signup, no watermark, no email wall and no cap on how many you make.
The tool does the parts people get wrong. It reads the state code out of both GSTINs and decides whether the supply is intra-state — CGST plus SGST at half the rate each — or inter-state, where a single IGST line applies. It checks your GSTIN against the mod-36 check digit built into the format. It holds you to the 16-character limit Rule 46(b) puts on invoice numbers. It writes the total in words using lakh and crore rather than millions, and it rounds to the nearest rupee with a visible round-off line so the arithmetic reconciles.
Everything happens in your browser. The invoice is never uploaded, and the PDF is produced on your own machine — which is why it works on a slow connection and why we can promise the data goes nowhere.
What a GST invoice has to contain
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists the particulars a tax invoice must carry. The ones freelancers most often leave off are the place of supply, the SAC code against each line, and the reverse-charge indicator — which has to be stated even when the answer is "no". The completeness checklist beside the form tracks all of them live, so you can see what is missing before the client does.
A few particulars are worth knowing rather than looking up:
- Your GSTIN and the recipient's, where the recipient is registered. An
unregistered client needs a name and address, and their state still determines the place of supply.
- A consecutive serial number, unique within the financial year, at most 16
characters, using only letters, digits, hyphens and slashes.
- The description, quantity, unit, rate and taxable value for every line, and
the tax rate and amount against each.
- A signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised person.
CGST plus SGST, or IGST
The split is not a preference. It follows from comparing your state with the place of supply:
- Same state → CGST + SGST, each at half the rate. An 18% service billed
within Gujarat is 9% CGST and 9% SGST.
- Different states → IGST at the full rate, on one line.
For services supplied to a registered person, the place of supply is that person's location — which their GSTIN encodes in its first two digits. For an unregistered recipient it is generally their address on record, and where you have no address, your own location. That is why the tool asks you to pick a state when the client has no GSTIN: without it, the split is a guess.
SAC codes
Services use SAC codes, goods use HSN. Most freelance work sits in the 9983 and 9985 families — 998314 for IT design and development, 998313 for IT consulting, 998371 for advertising, 998596 for events. Picking between two neighbouring codes rarely changes your rate, but the code has to be on the invoice and it has to match what you report in GSTR-1, so it is worth settling once.
Numbering that survives a scrutiny notice
Rule 46(b) wants a consecutive series, unique within the financial year. In practice, the failure mode is not a wrong format — it is a gap. A skipped or reused number on a return that gets compared against your books is the kind of discrepancy that turns a routine check into a longer conversation. Pick a prefix, start at 001, and never reset mid-year.
This tool cannot help with that. It makes one invoice and forgets it, so the next one starts from INV-001 again unless you change it yourself. That is a real limitation, and it is the single strongest reason people move to something that keeps the series for them.
Rounding, and the amount in words
Section 170 rounds tax to the nearest rupee. The tool rounds the grand total to the nearest whole rupee and prints the adjustment as a visible Round off line, so your invoice total and your ledger agree without anybody having to reverse-engineer a difference of forty paise.
The amount in words uses the Indian numbering system — Rupees One Lakh Twenty Thousand Five Hundred and Forty Only, not "one hundred twenty thousand". It is a small thing that reads immediately wrong to an Indian accountant when software gets it from a US template.
What this tool deliberately does not do
It does not save your clients, remember your numbering, track whether you were paid, or file anything. It makes one correct invoice, hands you the PDF, and stops. If you are doing this every month, that gap is the argument for Mavoin — ₹199 a month, 30-day trial, no card.
Frequently asked questions
Is this GST invoice generator really free?
Yes. There is no signup, no email wall, no watermark over the invoice and no cap on downloads. The PDF carries a small Mavoin credit line in the footer, below your signature block — that is the whole cost.
Do I need to create an account to download the PDF?
No. The invoice is built and rendered entirely in your browser, and the download works with no account and no session. Saving an invoice into a Mavoin account is a separate, optional button.
Does my invoice data get uploaded anywhere?
Not unless you choose to save it. The form state lives in your browser's local storage and the PDF is generated on your own device, so no invoice field reaches our servers on the download path.
How does the tool decide between CGST/SGST and IGST?
It compares your state code with the place of supply. Same state gives CGST plus SGST at half the rate each; different states give a single IGST line at the full rate. The state codes come from the first two digits of each GSTIN, or from the place-of-supply dropdown when your client is unregistered.
What if my client is not GST-registered?
Leave their GSTIN blank and pick the place of supply yourself — for services, that is generally the state where the recipient is located. The invoice is still a valid tax invoice; it simply has no recipient GSTIN on it.
Can I use this invoice for my GST returns?
The format carries the Rule 46 particulars, so it is a normal tax invoice for reporting purposes. Confirm the rate and treatment with your CA before you issue it — we generate a format, not tax advice.
Which GST rate should I put on a freelance service?
Most professional and IT services are taxed at 18%, but rates change and some categories are notified differently. Check the current rate for your SAC code with your CA rather than assuming — the tool lets you type any rate.
Can I make an invoice for a client outside India here?
Use the export invoice generator instead. An export of services is zero-rated and needs a different tax treatment, a currency and exchange rate, and an LUT or IGST declaration on the face of the invoice.
